My first earthquake

This past weekend I experienced my first California earthquake. Northridge and CSUN were hit pretty hard as you can see by these pictures.

Just kidding. Those pictures were actually from the earthquake that hit Northridge in 1994. Supposedly CSUN was completely demolished. I searched it on Wikipedia and they had this to say:

"The 1994 Northridge earthquake occurred on January 17, 1994 at 4:30:55 AM Pacific Standard Time in the city of Los Angeles, California, falling on Martin Luther King Day in 1994. The earthquake had a "moderate" moment magnitude of 6.7, but the ground acceleration was the highest ever instrumentally recorded in an urban area in North America[1], and it proved to be the most costly earthquake in United States history."

Although I didn't experience an earthquake such as this one, there was an earthquake here this past weekend. At first I just thought it was my rowdy neighbours slamming their door, but the walls ended up shaking longer than normal. Don't worry mom, I'm fine. It was very tiny...well tiny for an earthquake. Supposedly there was another one today at noon, but I didn't feel anything.

Happy cows come from California

I think this is a sign...perhaps a certain farmer needs to move to California.

Hiking in Topanga Canyon

Meghan and Michele came to visit me here in Northridge for a few days this past week. Tuesday was the only day that I had off so we went hiking in Topanga canyon. It was very overcast and therefore the views were not the greatest but it was still a good time.

This one's for you Kyle....flowering kale's cousin.

Here's a view of the Pacific Palisades.

The trail that we took ends at a point overlooking the ocean. If it hadn't been so cloudy this picture would have been much more impressive. I'm sure the smog didn't help either. So just use your imagination.

Emily's visit

A few weeks ago was spring break and lucky for me Emily came out to visit. Unlucky for her, it turns out that April seems to be a bad month weather wise and there were more cloudy days while she was here than there have been the whole time I've been here.

The first thing on our agenda was to go to Rodeo Drive and go shopping. Well, actually we did more looking than actual shopping. Although we didn't even go into most of the stores because they looked way too fancy and way too intimidating. I was pretty disappointed though because with all of those fancy stores, Rodeo Drive was definitely lacking in one area....street meat. I mean shopping at Louis Vuitton really made me crave some sausage on a bun.

For our next outing we headed to Hollywood to check out the walk of fame. I think that's all I need to say. Hollywood is pretty boring. We did go to the wax museum which we thought would be fun. Were we ever wrong. It was so bad that most of the time we couldn't even tell who the wax figures were. I'm pretty sure that's a bad sign. Buying a ticket for the wax museum also got us entrance to the Guiness Book of World Records museum. However, I don't know how great of a deal that was because it was just as bad as the wax museum.

Despite the weather, Emily and I attempted to go to the beach. We didn't last very long and we spent most of our time huddled under our beach towels to keep warm. We took the scenic route home through the mountains though so our day wasn't a total bust.
